Episode 27- C.I.T, Crisis Intervention Teams. What it is and what it is not.

Mental health crisis is a challenge facing modern law enforcement officers daily. On this episode I sat down with Jeff Pierce. Jeff was the supervisor in charge of a large metro agency CIT program. In the wake of recent high profile events media outlets have focused on CIT officers….well what are they? Hopefully this will give you the insight into what the program is and what it is not.

Good episode on CIT. The one comment I have is on not having every officer trained in CIT. I disagree with only having those who want to or only having 25% of the department trained. What if an untrained officer responds to a call that turns into a mental crisis call? Is there time to wait for a trained CIT officer to respond? Maybe or maybe not but I would rather have every officer trained so they are capable of handling the situation.

Thanks for your feedback. All officers as I aware receive continuing education on mental crisis. The problem aside from the logistical budget nightmare is not all officers have the capacity nor the will to participate in that specialty. So if it becomes a mandate I personally don’t feel as the quality of care would do anything but decrease. Also in 19yrs of doing police work and not being involved in the CIT program, I never had any problem delivering a consumer to the right facility or completing a 3rd party affidavit for emergency detention provided said consumer was willing and compliant to the degree necessary.
